The triple bottom line (TBL) is a framework for measuring the performance of a business or organization not just by financial profit, but by three dimensions of impact:

  1. People (Social) – How the organization affects employees, communities, and society at large. This includes fair labor practices, community engagement, human rights, and social equity.

  2. Planet (Environmental) – How the organization impacts the environment. This includes resource use, waste, emissions, carbon footprint, and sustainability initiatives.

  3. Profit (Economic) – The traditional measure of financial performance, including revenue, profit margins, and economic viability.

The idea is that organizations should not focus solely on financial gains but also consider social and environmental responsibilities. It’s sometimes summarized as “People, Planet, Profit.”

Companies using TBL aim for sustainable business practices that balance economic success with social good and environmental stewardship.
