DARVO is an acronym that stands for Deny, Attack, and Reverse Victim and Offender. It is a pattern of behavior often used by perpetrators of abuse to deflect responsibility for their actions. The perpetrator denies any wrongdoing, attacks the victim, and then reverses the roles, claiming themselves to be the victim.

Here's a more detailed breakdown of each component:
  • Deny:
The perpetrator vehemently denies that any wrongdoing has occurred. They may use gaslighting to make the victim question their own perceptions or reality.
  • Attack:
The perpetrator attacks the victim and anyone who supports them. This can involve false accusations, insults, or attempts to damage the victim's reputation.
  • Reverse Victim and Offender:
The perpetrator flips the narrative, portraying themselves as the victim and the actual victim as the aggressor.
DARVO is a form of manipulation and control that is used to avoid taking responsibility for harmful behavior. It can be particularly effective in abusive relationships, as the perpetrator's behavior can make the victim feel confused, self-blame, and isolated.
