People from many regions are not viewed as complex individuals or societies, but merely as convenient, two-dimensional subjects for the "outside" world's narratives.
The Narrative Flip: This interchangeability can be illustrated by showing how the external view can arbitrarily switch between positive and negative labels:
"Liberated" or "admired" (Positive framing)
"Pittied" or "critisized" (Negative framing)
Despite the switch, the underlying external, self-serving perspective remains "absolutely the same thing."
Countering misrepresentation and historical/political marginalization is not merely about correcting a fact but dismissing an entire framework, arguing that misrepresentation (and the culture/entity it represents) views their history and struggles through a cynical, simplistic, and ultimately colonial lens where local truths are irrelevant to the larger external narrative.
