If Habermas wants to defend rationality, it should be without assuming that its alternative is simply stammering at the gates of civilization. But communicative rationality does matter. The stakes are high. The stakes of rational communication lie not in making and maintaining communication in order to stave off manufactured "barbarism", but in recognizing how reason itself is weaponized to delineate who is heard and who must disappear.
