If Habermas wants to defend rationality, it should be without assuming that its alternative is simply stammering at the gates of civilization. But communicative rationality does matter. The stakes are high. The stakes of rational communication lie not in making and maintaining communication in order to stave off manufactured "barbarism", but in recognizing how reason itself is weaponized to delineate who is heard and who must disappear.
"To never forget your own insignificance. To never get used to the unspeakable violence and the vulgar disparity of life around you. To seek joy in the saddest places...To never simplify what is complicated or complicate what is simple. To respect strength, never power. Above all, to watch. To try and understand. To never look away and never, never, to forget." ~ Arundhati Roy
