As neoliberalism has it, the market, which is the
1:19wellspring of human freedom, must be
1:21allowed to operate free of
1:22constraints and regulations, anything less
1:24diminishes the freedom of all human
1:26beings and places civilization in
1:28enormous peril. Practically speaking
1:30neoliberalism refers to the various ways
1:32in which our society has elevated
1:34competition above all other conceptions
1:36of economic rationality, retasked the state
1:39with liberating competitive markets and
1:40put increased responsibilities onto the
1:43private individual to guarantee their
1:44own survival. Neoliberalism conceives of
1:47the world as one big interconnected
1:49competitive market where human beings
1:51derive their freedom from their ability
1:52to express their preferences through
1:54consumption and represent their value
1:56through their ability to sell their
1:57labor for wages
, since all people enjoy
2:00equal access to opportunity within
2:02this competitive market inequality
2:04between winners and losers is permitted
2:06and because neoliberalism asserts that
2:08there is an unbreakable link between
2:09economic and political freedom
2:11neoliberalism seeks a world with
2:13unfettered economic freedom
2:14which would naturally guarantee
2:16political freedom for all. Therefore
2:18according to neoliberalism the
2:20main role of government should be
2:21to maximize economic freedom no matter
2:23the cost.
