On the Real Meaning of Collapse Fantasies

  • "We're not really rooting for destruction. We're rooting for permission to stop pretending."

  • "Total societal collapse is apparently the only thing left on the menu that might grant me a break."

  • "We're not fantasizing about fire. We're fantasizing about quiet."

  • "If the planet's going to burn, can we at least skip the part where I have to go to work tomorrow?"

  • "The apocalypse becomes a kind of perverse therapy... the only scenario where you're allowed to stop trying so hard without feeling like a failure."

  • "The apocalypse as a cosmic get-out-of-jail-free card. You're no longer a brand—you're basically a person again."

Rather than leaving the reader in a pit of existential dread or apocalyptic nostalgia, the essay ends on a constructive philosophical thesis. It moves from waiting for an external reset (the asteroid) to creating internal resets (subtraction, refusal to perform, standing in the grass, talking openly about fear). It transforms a passive escape fantasy into a form of quiet, everyday rebellion.
