What underwrites institutionalization is the assumption that there must be an encounter between 25:17a subject and someone observing that subject when historically that has not
25:23been the case. Knowledge has been something that has happened and has been developed more 25:29in community settings with one another not in closed off doctor's offices with 25:36one person trying to understand one other person. And Foucault attributes this, in part, 25:42to the Catholic church and the confessional booth where the confessional booth is that site where 25:48someone is supposed to give up their truths. And because their sins are the most true things that people 25:54ever speak according to the church, there's a26:01priest there who has the ability to arbitrate and to decide 26:09to absolve you of your sins, to essentially grant you 26:17a place in heaven.
